Alpaca trip to

Hey all, thought you'd enjoy this info.

So I visited the Alpaca ranch in Montero, CA just south of Pacifica (25 min from SF), and we learned much from our time there. From what I gather, this is a huge scheme to make money from sex/slave trade of alpacas.

Photos if you're curious : www.thetravis.com/gallery/A...by-the-Sea
(it right off of the pacific ocean - you can't tell since it was a typical foggy day in the Bay area)

- The average alpaca will cost between $15,000 - $18,000 (US)
- The going rate of the "STUD" service is $5000 per session I suppose.
- Gestation (the length of time to make a new alpaca is 11months)
- Alpacas can be pregnant their entire lives (roughly 20 years)
- Alpaca wool can be a commodity

With these facts I found that this ranch kept the females pregnant all the time in order to make the ranch pay for itself. Within 1 month of an Alpaca giving birth they can be pregnant again!

They seem to keep the males in their places so they are always eager to participate in the "STUDING SERVICE".

I figure a ranch that has 12 females and maybe 2 or 3 males can be bringing in $20,000 to $30,000 a month. Year round if you plan the pregnancies correctly.

Also it seemed that the ranch wanted more alpacas to be in the states to generate an alpaca wool industry. So maybe in 10 years more clothing will be on the market :-)
