Armida Alpacas - purveyers of all things alpaca!

New to The Tribe in general and this tribe in particular, I thought it might be wise to spread the good word about Armida. Mostly, the word is, "We're here!" We've got critters for sale, fifty pounds of fiber I'd love to move (except for our last black fleece, out of which a sweater WILL be, I promise), and various means of making the fiber friendly to people who don't card, spin, or knit.

I suppose, mostly, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about means of marketing this fiber so I can have a little of my basement back. I'd also love to sell some of the critters on the list, but my main concern is the fiber, today. It's all lovely stuff, but, as mentioned, there is rather a lot of it. Unfortunately, there are no mills in the area that will handle it (or at least none without absurd notions about paying us, or making us buy back our own stuff to sell off our own farm, which isn't feasible for a number of reasons.)

In case anyone is curious, we're on Alpaca Nation (not that it's helping the fiber sales) as Armida Alpacas, a farm in southern Vermont. www.alpacanation.com/armidaalpacas.asp This is more eloquent than I'm being at the moment, so.

Checking your Alpaca for Intestinal Parasites

I found this advice extremely helpful for my Alpaca farm. Intestinal parasites are the second-leading cause of illness for North American alpacas.

1) Purchase elbow-length utility gloves
2) Acquire a large can of water-based lubricant
3) Be sure your alpaca has not eaten in the last 24 hours
Alpaca trip to

Hey all, thought you'd enjoy this info.

So I visited the Alpaca ranch in Montero, CA just south of Pacifica (25 min from SF), and we learned much from our time there. From what I gather, this is a huge scheme to make money from sex/slave trade of alpacas.

Photos if you're curious : http://www.thetravis.com/gallery/Alpacas-by-the-Sea
(it right off of the pacific ocean - you can't tell since it was a typical foggy day in the Bay area)

- The average alpaca will cost between $15,000 - $18,000 (US)
- The going rate of the "STUD" service is $5000 per session I suppose.
- Gestation (the length of time to make a new alpaca is 11months)
- Alpacas can be pregnant their entire lives (roughly 20 years)
- Alpaca wool can be a commodity

With these facts I found that this ranch kept the females pregnant all the time in order to make the ranch pay for itself. Within 1 month of an Alpaca giving birth they can be pregnant again!

They seem to keep the males in their places so they are always eager to participate in the "STUDING SERVICE".

I figure a ranch that has 12 females and maybe 2 or 3 males can be bringing in $20,000 to $30,000 a month. Year round if you plan the pregnancies correctly.

Also it seemed that the ranch wanted more alpacas to be in the states to generate an alpaca wool industry. So maybe in 10 years more clothing will be on the market :-)
